Adopt a Block Update: $2,175 of $12,000 raised

Neighbors,

As of today, Wednesday, August 18 at 1:22 pm we’ve raised: $2,175 of our $12,000 goal. While we’ve raised enough money to keep the networks online temporarily, we need your financial support to keep the networks online long-term.
It’s costs NFN $500 per month to keep our networks up and running and another $500.00 per month for general operating expenses. We have had limited money for general operating expenses for the last two years and so we have gone without, and I have been personally covered much of what was essential. With this said, we really need your support! Please give what you can today.
Donate $50, become the Mayor of your Block by Adopting your Block - PLEASE DONATE NOW!
  • You get to be the the Mayor of your Block for one year.
  • Get Invitations to EXCLUSIVE quarterly Mayor ONLY Events.
  • A really awesome Mayor decal to proudly display on your building.
  • Mayor’s business cards to hand out to your neighbors.
  • A tax deduction. Sweetness!
  • Also, there are rumors that your neighbors will bake you pies and do your laundry for you.
Please see FAQ below for details and see the Mayor’s map to see if your street is still available.
Don’t have $50? How about $25, $15, or even $5. GIVE WHAT YOU CAN NOW!
Any amount you can give is appreciated! For your donation, you’ll become a Very Important Neighbors and get a Very Important Neighbor Decal to proudly display.
FAQ:
Which streets already have mayors?
See the Mayor’s map to see if your street is still available.
How come Neighbors for Neighbors needs money now?
First, Ning, the company that develops the social networking platform we use generously donated the monthly fees on our networks for the first year.
The year is over. Thanks again Ning! Second, last year we applied for a bunch of grants. None came through, even the one we totally thought we’d get, we did not. Bummer.

Third. We have no funding sources. We’re neighbor powered, and now we need to be neighbor funded too. With more than 3200 neighbors in the networks, we can keep this going for years to come. Please chip in!

How much money does Neighbors for Neighbors need?

  • Minimum: We need $6,000 alone just to keep all networks operating for one more year.
  • To make due: $6,000 more dollars will cover all of our current general operating expenses.
  • Ideally: $125,000 to staff our operation and cover all expenses. We’ll take that on next.

What does a block consist of, what will you be overseeing?

  • A block consists of all homes/plots on one street between two adjacent cross streets.
  • You must live on the block you adopt.
  • There can be multiple mayors on a street, only if there are multiple blocks.
  • There can only be One Mayor per block.
  • There is nothing to oversee. All you have to do is donate. If you want to get more involved, great, otherwise, your financial support is what we need.

What if more than one person donates on my block?

  • First donor is the Mayor for one year.
  • Subsequent donors will be offered the title of Deputy Mayor but not have mayoral privileges.

Special thanks to Michelle C and Ning Y for editing and David K for making the graphic!

With much appreciation, your neighbor,

Vote for us once a day through march so we can win $250K in funding!

Dear Neighbors,

Imagine if every neighborhood in America had a networks like ours that connected the people who live work and serve in the neighborhood and made it possible communicate and collaborate to improve quality of life and solve problems.
What if you could make that happen right now with a couple clicks of your mouse?  You can by voting for us!

My name is Joseph Porcelli, and I’m the founder and Chief Executive Neighbor at NeighborsForNeighbors.org. This month we are in the running to win $250,000 from Pepsi as part of the Pepsi Refresh Project. I am writing to ask you to vote for us!

Why vote for us?
We are out to transform how people who live work and serve in neighborhoods communicate and collaborate to improve quality of life and solve problems. Check out one of our network - http://jamaicaplain.neighborsforneighbors.org
We’re pioneering the new social infrastructure by operating neighborhood-centric community-generate social networks that serve as a soundboard for voice and a springboard for action. Unlike Facebook, our networks connect people who live, work and serve in their neighborhood with the purpose of brining people together offline to do things with and for each other.

Our goals is to give away our model and provide support to those who want to replicate it where they live, but we need funding to accomplish this goal.

Please vote for us! so we can transform neighborhoods around America!

Voting started Monday, and will continue through March. You can vote once a day for us and nine other ideas you like. Judging is simple; the two projects that get the most votes win funding.
With much appreciation,
Your neighbor, Joseph!

Helicopters needed for Haiti Relief

Our friends at Working Together for Haiti, are handling an extraordinary amount of offers and inquiries.

The response to this catastrophe has been incredible and they are thrilled to be able to use their network on the ground to facilitate logistics and communication.

The gap in our effectiveness, as you might imagine, is in transportation.

They are casting the widest possible net of inquiries for leads to persons in the field of sea or air transport — helicopters would be ideal.

5 stars = $450,000 in funding

Neighbors

As you know, Neighbors for Neighbors is participating in the Knight News Challenge. Today we have been teetering between first and second place as the top rated contestant. While this is great news – our goal is to be the top rated contestant and stay that way through the 12/15 deadline.
Please give our application 5 stars right now http://bit.ly/7xasK0

Hint – mouse over the stars from left to right and then comment on our application! Tell them about the difference we are making for you.

While being top rated does not guarantee the judges will choose us – it really helps. If we win, we will get $225,000 or more a year for two years to fund our operation.

With funding we can strengthen our operation in Boston and powerfully work towards our vision of neighborhoods where we know the names of our neighbors and those who serve us, are safe and happy, have access to services and share resources, and are motivated to proactively contribute to each other’s quality of life.

  1. Please give our application 5 stars by mousing over the stars from left to right and then comment on our application - http://bit.ly/25QNnS
  2. Please update your facebook and twitter status to say - Help Neighbors for Neighbors get funding by giving them 5 stars – http://bit.ly/3LuBG8
  3. Please make your secure donation now

Note our Pay Pal account says Neighbors for Neighbors JP – but it is for the entire city – we haven’t figured out how to change it yet.

Thank you!
Joseph

What kind of neighborhood do you want to live in?

I want to live in a neighborhood where I know my neighbors names, I want to do fun activities with my neighbors and serve those who need help. I want to know how I can get involved, increase the safety of my neighborhood and how we can address quality of life issues that we face.

If this sounds good to you, then I ask you to stand with Neighbors for Neighbors to create cohesive neighborhoods for all of Boston’s residents.  We believe that being able to communicate and collaborate with each other and community and city resources is critical just like streets, bridges, hospitals, and schools. The goal for our networks is to serve as an online social infrastructure to connect you to others who live, work, and serve in your neighborhood and to provide tools to help you communicate and collaborate around our common interests.

Neighbors for Neighbors has been a labor of love for myself and our team for the last five years, but to truly deliver on our mission we need your help.

How can you help? The best way I can put it is we’ve built the ship, now we need you to help sail it and help fund the journey.

Here is how you can help.

1. Give us 5 stars and comment on our the Knight News Challenge application: Deadline Dec. 15!

Currently we are ranked #7. If we win, the Knight Foundation will provide seed funding (we’ve asked for $225,000 per year for two years) for our operation. This would be AWESOME. Please give us 5 stars by moving your mouse from left to right over the stars after you’ve signed in. Then, please leave a comment on the application telling the judges how our networks are making a difference for you and our community.

Rate and Comment now!

2. Make a tax-deductible donation in any amount:

There are now 2,500 of us throughout Boston. If each of us donated $5 we’d have $12,500. For those who can give more, please do. If you can’t give a this time, don’t worry, we’ll ask for money again in the future – promise. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the December 31. We’ll use this money to cover our operating costs and to fund community events. Your donation will also demonstrate your buy-in and support that is key to corporations and foundations we are approaching.

Please make your secure donation now!

3. Volunteer your time and talents:

Currently we are looking for people to join the following teams:

  • Experienced fundraisers: Help us develop and execute fundraising strategies.
  • Content creators & bloggers: Share your stories, photo’s, video’s, music, and events about our neighborhoods and city with your neighbors!
  • Neighborhood organizers: Help promote and manage your neighborhoods network.
  • Facebook community managers: Help generate content, conversations and interact with our facebook fans.
  • Twitter community managers: Help generate content, conversations, and  interact with our followers on twitter.
  • WordPress community managers: Help generate content and conversations with our authors, readers, and subscribers on our blog.
  • Technical writer: Help create easy to read instructions and media to inform our members how to use our networks.

Help us get a $225,000 grant!

Neighbors,

We’ve just applied for Knight News Challenge and we need your help to show community support.

The news challenge is to come up with an innovative way to use digital media to get information out to a specific geographic area. I know right, hell0….Neighbors for Neighbors is already doing this and that is why we applied!

Please read, rate, and comment on our application and spread the word far and wide.

With this funding we’ll hire two full time staff people, one to run Boston operations and the second to pursue partnerships around the world to share our knowledge and recruit other cities to join the NFN family of networks!

Thanks,

Joseph

$$ GOAL REACHED!! I’m presenting at the Gov 2.0 Expo in DC! Please pitch in to help get me there!

WE BLEW BY OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL! – THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! In total we raised $560 dollars. The additional money we raised ($160) will go into our general fund – which is getting low – so yeah neighbors!

Quick Facts:

- 19 of you donatedand
- one individual (who wished be anonymous) donated $200!
- two donations came from non-members but big supporters – Steve Ressler and Steven Clift!

Special thanks to Ben Sheldon for giving me the idea that people would actually give money to help me get to DC – not just points!

If you still wish to donate, our next fundraising campain will be to raise money for the flyers we need to print. The cost will be $550. If you wish to contribute to that fund you may do so here.

Neighbors,

Earlier this summer, Gina Bianchini the CEO of Ning.com, the platform Neighbors for Neighbors uses to build all of our social network demonstrated, the Jamaica Plain network at the Personal Democracy Forum in NYC. In the audience was Laurel Ruma Editor, O’Reilly Media who sent me an email encouraging me to submit an application to present in the Showcase for the Gov 2.0 Expo on September 8th in Washington DC.

I did, and my proposal was accepted! This is super cool because I anticipate it will generate lots of interest about our neighborhood connecting and organizing model/tool, and hopefully lead to other cities wanted to bring us there – hence driving revenue to finally make Neighbors for Neighbors a sustainable operation. There is nothing more that I’d love to do than run Neighbors for Neighbors full time (I do sorta already – but it would be nice to make a living at it).

My father generously donated points for my hotel stay (thanks Dad!) – and I asking you to pitch in a couple bucks to cover my flight, cab fares, and incidentals. The total cash I need to raise is $400.00.

Please pitch in what you can here
.

Your donation is tax-deductible as we are 501c3.
