Invasive Speacies? Re-post

September 13, 2006

While at Beecher Park this on Wednesday morning Amy asked are the below plants invasive?

I posted these pictures yesterday. Jenn asked for see flowers, took more photos this morning. They are posted below with links to high-res versions as well. Note there are two types of plants in this cluster. One has blowming blue flowers and heart shapped leaves. The one we are wondering about only has buds at this point. There is also a community garden on the other side of the fence. Thanks for you input.

Well, it is hard to tell from way back here, but I think that is Wild cucumber, Echinocystis lobata, which is a native species (Could possibly be a Bur cucumber, also a native. I’d need to see a close-up of the flowers to be sure…feel free to post or send one).
So it’s not “invasive” according to the official definition, which requires the species to be non-native. As to whether it has plans to take over the park, probably not. Either one of those vines can be weedy, and clambor over other plants, but you usually don’t see them taking over large chunks of space like Asiatic bittersweet or even the native catbriars.

Nice photo! Five-petaled flowers – that’s bur cucumber, Sicyos angulatus. Check out http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/sicyosangu.html
