South Street Businesses Fire Fund
JP Centre/South Main Streets has set up a fund for the 5 businesses affected by the fire on South Street. To make a donation, make out your check and send it to the “South Street Businesses Fire Fund”, c/o JP Centre/South Main Streets, P.O. Box 302712, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. We are also working with other city agencies and neighborhood organizations to provide support for the business owners. Information: info@jpcentresouth.org.

Boston Shines – Come out on Saturday and help clean up our neighborhood business district!
JP Centre/South is gearing up for Boston Shines this Saturday April 29th, from 8:45 am to 12 noon. We will be gathering in front of the JP CSMS office at 39 South Street (across from Curtis Hall and the JP Library) to divide up to clean 2 to 3 areas along Centre and South Streets. Tools, gloves, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please e- mail sharon@jpcentresouth.org or call 617-522-0300 to sign up or for more information.

First Thursdays – Art, Music and Dance along Centre and South Streets
First Thursdays will return on May 4th from 6 to 8 pm with art openings and receptions along Centre and South Streets, as well as musical and dance performances showcasing the talents of Spontaneous Celebrations’ artists. Blanchard’s Grand Wine Tasting Event and Storefront Improvement Celebration

Victorian Street Fair, May 14
Stop by the Loring Greenough House at 12 South Street between 11:30 am and 5 pm for Mothers’ Day Tea & Pastries (to benefit Loring Greenough House), music, picnic lunch, theatrical performances, “Victorian” portrait photographer, Historical Society walking tours, craft demonstrations. JP Centre/South Main Streets will be initiating First Thursdays 2006

JP Centre/South Main Streets will be initiating First Thursdays 2006
on May 4th, from 6 to 8 p.m…..Thanks to a matching grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, this year’s series will include  music, poetry, film, and dance as well as art exhibits throughout  the Centre/South business district.  Featured performances on May 4th present a preview of
the Wake-Up-The Earth Festival from Spontaneous Celebrations,  including the Pan United Steel Band (First Baptist Church tent), gypsy music by Incus
(JP Licks patio), klezmer and circus music by Stick and Rag Village Orchestra (Curtis Hall lawn), hip-hop dance by the Beantown Society (South Street Mall, across from Harvest and Fiore’s Bakery)…plus art exhibits in 25 businesses up and down Centre and South Streets.

Call for volunteers:  To hand out First Thursdays fliers at Stoneybrook and Green Street subway stations on May 3, a.m. and p.m., and to help prepare balloons and signs for exhibit sites, May 4 morning and afternoon shifts.

Boston Area MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers)

Attention Mothers of Pre-schoolers!

If you are home during the weekdays and would like to come to a
supportive environment and spend time with other mothers who have
young children, have we got a program for you!

What: Boston Area MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers)

When:  The first and third Thursday of each month

Where:  River of Life Church
        440 Centre Street, JP

Time:  9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Cost:  $10

This group is geared towards mothers who have children between the
ages of birth to five, for the purposes of education and support,
networking, making new friends and getting out of the house!  While
your children are being cared for by “MOPPETTS” workers, you get time
with other mothers who are raising young children, just like you.  We
address a different topic each time and have various speakers with
expertise in that area come share their knowledge, insights and
experiences with us.  We have refreshments and do fun things on the
off weeks (like going to the Children’s Museum, The New England
Aquarium and each other’s houses for play dates).

Topics we have covered this past year include:

-  pampering yourself
-  nutrition and exercise for mothers with little kids
-  low cost fun and recreation
-  establishing holiday traditions
-  schooling options (public, private and home schooling)
-  stress management for mothers with young children
-  babysitting
-  FlyLady “The Danger of Too Much Stuff”!
-  team building for families
-  encouraging your kids to be more cooperative through creative play

Middle East Book Club Update

This is an exerpt taken from the Middle East Book Club:

There is an anonymous 24 year old ex computer engineer blogger living in Baghdad, who writes under the pseudonym Riverbend at http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/. She started he diary on August 17, 2003 and it is about to be published in the US on April 15. But we can read it on the web for free. I have been following her writing for two years and find her descriptions of family life, even under occupation, very authentic. We can start with the archives on the left of the page and note that they are arranged in reverse chronological order with the earlier postings lower down the page. In the UK her collection has been nominated for the BBC’s Samuel Johnson Prize. Please have a look and let me know what you think.
